Navigating to UC Berkeley’s Computer Science Program

Situation: A high school student with a passion for technology faced uncertainty navigating the college application landscape. Despite his aptitude, he needed direction in selecting extracurricular activities, securing impactful letters of recommendation, and choosing the right courses to enhance his college application.

Approach: We initiated our process with deep-dive conversations to truly understand Kevin’s strengths, interests, and aspirations. Our personalized strategy involved:

Activities: We helped Kevin choose extracurricular activities that would demonstrate his commitment and leadership in tech-related endeavors. We also helped him choose personal projects that highlighted his knowledge in computer science and his passion for social justice.

Recommendations: We guided Kevin on how to maintain and grow relationships with his teacher to help him ultimately secure strong letters of recommendation

Course Selection: During his junior and senior year of high school we worked with Kevin to help him choose courses that would be foundational for his academic journey in university.

Assisting in choosing a rigorous academic course load that would showcase his preparedness for a challenging college curriculum.

College and Major Selection: Based on our conversations and Kevin’s interests we identified majors such as data science and computer science as ideal fits for Kevin. From those interests we were able to come up with a list of academic institutions that would help Kevin take the next professional step in his journey

Essay Topics: We had many meetings to learn about Kevin and what he does in his free time so that we could create a story and a narrative that would help him stand out from the rest of the applicant pool.

Outcome: Ultimately, Kevin ended up being accepted to many universities with lots of scholarships and chose to attend UC Berkeley on a Regents scholarship where he is now studying computer science.

For Parents: The college application process is a complicated and time intensive endeavor. We recognize that there is no one size fits all approach. That’s why we don’t have a formula, or hard-and-fast and rules that we follow. We understand that success looks different for everyone. We hope that you will invest in your child’s future by giving us the opportunity to be a part of their academic journey.
